## Emplacement
A seaside resort in Normandy, Lion-sur-Mer is located in the department of Calvados, on the Côte de Nacre and the Channel coast. The town is located about fifteen kilometers from Caen, not far from Douvres-la-Délivrande and Ouistreham.
The site of the commune has been occupied since Antiquity, as shown by some vestiges of buildings dating from after the colonization by the Romans. However, it was not until the Middle Ages that the village of Lion-sur-Mer really took shape, becoming a small fishing port in the 12th century. The town became a seaside resort in the 19th century, with the fashion for sea bathing. Villas were quickly built on the waterfront, and Lion-sur-Mer now focuses primarily on tourism.
The town was the site of the landing of British troops on June 6, 1944, and is also known for its role in the Second World War.
