The farmhouse is situated 5 km from the nearest village, where you will find shops, bank, Atm, post office, pharmacy, local produce market etc... Larger supermarkets at 15 km distance. An 'international' doctor is located at 15 km and will make house calls if necessary.
Now the fun things! Beaches are close by. Wide and not crowded, even in summer season.
The Ria Formosa is a natural reserve that hosts a great variety of interesting birds as well as an information centre and an original tidal watermill.
At 20 min car drive: Faro, the capital of the Algarve with its old walled city part and international airport. Tavira with the old roman bridge, the 40 churches and many restaurants and terraces. Olhão, a typical fisherman's town with loads of places to enjoy fresh fish and seafood.
In front of the coast and the natural reserve you will find several beautiful islands, great beaches, little restaurants. You can reach them by ferry or by water taxi.
The best advice is to just go out there and explore. Take a drive in the hills and meet flocks of sheep and goats, old ladies on donkeys, women doing their laundry in the river or in the municipal laundry place. In the coastal villages fishermen will be repairing their nets, boats come and go. Take a drive to the end of the world in Sagres, the most southern point of Europe. Or just relax with a book in the garden or with a drink in the plunge pool. Pick your oranges for juice at breakfast in the garden. Pick some grapes as well please.
You want to visit an olive orchard and have a guided tour through the production unit? Or visit a winery? Attend a Fado concert? Almost everything is possible.
In the house you will find a folder with all kinds of useful information on things to do, places to go, on the beaches and what they offer. The info on the local produce markets, gypsy markets and flea markets. As well as some info on concerts, exhibitions etc...
